I could have sworn everything was supposed to be bigger in Texas, not China. But a cottage industry seems to have popped up around cloning Western netbooks and making them a little larger in China. Yesterday it was the 10 inch Dell Latitude 2100 that was blown up into an 11.1 inch model. Today’s it’s the HP Mini 5101’s turn.

Chinese PC maker Phecda is showing off an 11.6 inch laptop with a 1366 x 768 pixel display that looks an awful lot like the 10.1 inch HP Mini 5101. It has the same basic case design, a similar keyboard, and the touchpad looks virtually identical. Even the power button and LEDs look pretty much the same.

The Phecda is expected to sell for around $300 when it’s released in Shenzhen, China. While that’s about $100 less than the base price of an HP Mini 5101, you don’t get all the bells and whistles that come with the HP model.

The Phecda computer has a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, 2450mAh battery, and 1.3MB webcam.

The HP Mini 5101, on the other hand, has a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU, 2MP webcam, a 7200rpm hard drive, and a high capacity 55WHr battery option (although the standard 28WHr battery is likely similar to the one that comes with the Phecda PC.).

The bottom o the Phecda laptop does look a little diferent. Instead of a small access panel for upgrading the RAM, there’s a large access panel which will likely make it easy to upgrade the hard drive and other components as well.

One can think of many reasons why Nokia developed a mini-laptop:

- as Apple has entered the smartphone market, Nokia needs to compete in the computer industry too.
- convergence between mobile phones and computers blurs boundaries and as a leader in the smartphone category, it is not that difficult for nokia to bridge the gap and enter the netbook segment, therefore competing across all market segments.

- Nokia protects its key markets, as netbooks may soon be an alternative to smartphones.
- mobile operators growth is harder to come by, as markets become saturated and more users choose flat-rates. This could be a way for Nokia to get closer to mobile operators: Nokia offers operators a chance to get more from their subscriber base, by upgrading users to these devices as an additional line, in exchange for stocking more products in their portfolio, and keeping subsidy levels on Nokia devices.
The Nokia mini-laptop has remarkable specs and a small price, and Nokia is paying for Best Buy associates to offer Walk Out Working on the Nokia Booklet 3G, free to consumers. This is a big investment, and the return will probably not come from the margin (or loss) on each device, but from Ovi services. Or that is most likely what Nokia management is betting on.

As shown with the latest new entrants in the mobile industry, user interface and a suite of value added services is key to success, and this is what Nokia is trying to develop and add to its portfolio. Devices is not longer sufficient to build lasting business, which is what other major players in the industry should understand and focus on too.
